CV Writing Tips

Your CV is the most important tool in attracting employers by showing off your skills and experience. You may never have had to write a CV before, you may be accustomed to getting a job through word of mouth or people you know, but a CV is the only sure way you can guarantee you’re showcasing your talents.

Employers typically take an average of 5-7 seconds to look at your CV, so it is vital that it can stand out from the rest.

Our team can help you overcome any barriers you may have experienced in getting back into work. These can include long-term unemployment, learning or mental health barriers, or illness.

Take a look at our CV writing advice to get you started and inspire you to make a start on that CV, our employment specialists can support you with the rest.

    • Create a LinkedIn profile; if you’re applying for jobs it’s highly likely that employers will search for you online, create a professional LinkedIn profile and includes samples of your work, recommendations from former colleagues and customers.
    • Create a website using Weebly, Wix, or Squarespace. The websites offered by these companies can be created without any coding knowledge. A website is a great way to show your creative talents, so if you wanted to get started in a creative or digital industry think about making a website.
    • Use clear headings on your CV to organise sections and make it clear to employers where to look to find your experience and/or education.
    • Try and make your CV one or two pages long, employers don’t have long to look through your application so too much information might not get read and employers might decide not review your CV at all if it’s too long.
    • Be honest about your skills and experience, you’ll be asked about these at interview and expected to demonstrate your abilities if you get offered the job.
    • Make sure your CV is relevant to the job your applying for, use keywords in the advertised job description to highlight your suitability to the role, if you don’t have any experience in the industry you’re applying for, make sure you make it clear to the employer what transferable skills you have. For example, if you’ve previously worked in care but want to get into retail, highlight your experience of caring for others and highlight how you think this has given you great customer service skills.
    • Check your spelling and grammar, as well using spellcheck on your computer, get a friend or Landau employment specialist to proofread your CV too as they may have picked up something you might not have.
    • Keep your new CV up to date! Never send it off to the employer without checking it first!
    • Take a look at our free CV template to get you started, or bring it with you when you meet with a Landau employment specialist.
    • Create multiple CV’s for each job role you’re applying for if the jobs are varied enough, for example, Retail Assistant/Administrator/Cleaner
