Home-Start is a voluntary organisation, supporting families throughout the borough who have at least one child under the age of 5 and which are experiencing difficulties and will benefit from befriending and other support. Within the BBO Shropshire project, Home-Start Telford & Wrekin will provide volunteer placements including: home-visiting, working in family groups, shadowing family support co-ordinators and office support.
Home-Start helps families through home-visiting by volunteers. Weekly visits provide support, friendship and sometimes a small amount of practical assistance. Volunteers are carefully matched with families; support is reviewed by family support co-ordinators on a quarterly basis. Volunteers must have parenting experience for this role. There is a thorough vetting process and an eight day course of preparation. Volunteers have access to 24/7 support and regular supervision.
Home-Start runs two family groups each week and is offering placements for volunteers to gain experience in co-facilitating, planning and managing the groups. Participants will work alongside family support co-ordinators shadowing family visits, volunteer support sessions and safeguarding meetings. Participants will also learn about policies, file entry and various other family-support related work tasks.
Participants will gain general clerical/office experience, learning to use databases, social media, Home-Start internal data monitoring, filing, e-mail and mail circulations. Help with CV updating and looking at employment training options will be available to all participants. Referrals will be welcome and clients will be appropriately referred to other partners over the lifetime of the project.
