Small Woods Association

Small Woods Association

The ‘build-a-bench’ project woodland and greenwood craft skills development project based at the green wood centre, Ironbridge.

Our project will work with individuals who are ‘economically inactive’ within the Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin area specifically with people aged 50+ and young carers aged 19+.

The project is suitable for all abilities and no previous experience is required. The project aims to pro-vide enrichment, wellbeing and social inclusion with a focus on building confidence, self-esteem, meet-ing new people and developing new skills. We will provide training in traditional Green Wood Crafts initially learning basic skills including carving a simple spatula and spoon from a piece wood, making a three legged stool and simple weaving techniques. Participants will be encouraged to work together and use their skills to build a community bench that will be donated to a local organisation of their choice.

The maximum size of the group will be 6 and there will be two groups running each week on a Monday and Tuesday.

Participants will also get the chance to work in the woodland environment learning woodland skills to care and manage local woodlands and to produce suitable timber for the Build a Bench Project.

All are welcome to learn more about the project; simply give us a ring or drop down to the Green Wood Centre on either a Monday or Tuesday.
