Two years of unemployment had a profound impact on Becky; she lost confidence in her abilities to deliver care and was too scared to approach employers.
Through the Building Better Opportunities programme (led by Landau), which has been helping people across Shropshire get back into work, volunteering or further training through varied and engaging activities, Becky was matched to BBO Shropshire partner Telford and Wrekin CVS, a local charity who supports individuals through a dedicated volunteer programme.
Within just a few weeks of being referred to BBO Shropshire, Becky was found a voluntary role befriending older people.
Supported by her mentor and volunteer coordinator, Becky started to meet with a gentleman once a week at his home, this made a huge difference to both Becky and her new acquaintance; the gratitude she received dramatically improved her confidence and the visits stopped the gentleman living in solitude, frequently commenting how on how much he looks forwards to Becky’s visits.
Becky is now looking forward to what the future can bring, the BBO Shropshire programme has inspired her to consider her long-term career prospects in the voluntary sector. The programme will also support her in writing a CV, helping her to showcase a lifetime of experience and more recent voluntary experience to secure employment.
“Think about how far I’ve come in a year, what could I be doing in years’ time!”
Building Better Opportunities Shropshire is funded by the Big Lottery and European Social Fund. Funding supports projects in England that tackle poverty and promote social inclusion.
