Step Up Programme - Dec 2012 with Thomas Adams School Wem.

Referrals for a group of 6 year 10 students were received in September 2012. These were all boys with varying support needs but a common theme was the need for help with basic skills. Several of the boys had also been identified as having poor social skills and lacking in confidence. The first 3 weeks were spent undertaking the induction and getting to know a bit more about them so we could determine a programme for the 12 weeks. As part of Step Up the group undertook a basic introductory course to motor mechanics for half a day, and then spent another half day with the Landau training staff on other activities.

Some of the boys had also expressed some ideas about what they might do when they leave school and so this was also incorporated into the timetable. In order to provide the basic skills support but without making it too onerous a task for the group, we decided to create a news letter with articles and information about some of the sessions and planned to publish this just before Christmas to sell in the school.

Any monies made would be given to the schools’ Kenya project.

We arranged for the West Mercia Police Youth Engagement Officer to come into a session and the boys interviewed him and then wrote an article about it. Later in the programme we had a presentation from the Royal Navy as one of the boys was interested in this as a career and this then led to another article in the newsletter. We took the group to a local college for the afternoon to have a look around and find out about training and courses, and we had a visit from a local businesswoman who has a design and marketing agency. Some of the boys had undertaken a project in school to create their own brand of chocolate and this person specializes in food branding and promotion so it complemented the project well.

One of the boys was keen to undertake an article about Christmas food and the history behind it, so he did some excellent work finding out information and then creating a very interesting piece of work. We included a quiz and wordsearch with a prize for the winning entries and with the help and support of one of the media technicians we were able to spend several sessions in one of the schools’ media suites creating the finished newsletter.

The project was completed on schedule and all the boys participated well and enjoyed taking part. We were fortunate that we also had the help and support of one of the schools’ teaching assistants for the whole of the programme and this was invaluable. The feedback has been excellent both from staff and students and we have already been asked to support another group in the New Year.
